Why the ⚨ symbol?

Earlier this year, Araki shared recreations of his character sheets for a number of JoJo villains, including Dio. In the sex/gender field, the symbol written for Dio was "⚨". This zine aims to showcase the ways in which people have interpreted this, and the ways people have interpreted Dio as being trans, GNC, etc. prior to the use of this symbol too!

Does <interpretation of ⚨> count?

Yes! Whatever the ⚨ means to you, I am interested to see. Whether you see Dio as trans masc, or trans fem, or anything else; whether you use a current definition of transness, or how it might have manifested itself in the 1880s or in the 1980s; whether you take ⚨ to mean trans, nonbinary, androgynous, intersex, or something else – I want to see it.

What does 'open-submission' mean?

It means that anyone is welcome to submit any number and range of pieces, which will then be curated and formatted into a zine. This does not mean that everything submitted will be accepted, but it does mean that things not usually considered for fanzines/art books are welcome.

Will this zine be physical or digital?

It will be physical, as well as digital!

What charity will the zine be supporting?

TransActual, a UK charity who advocate for trans people and provide information about trans issues. They focus on essential areas like healthcare, legal rights, and press coverage, which are especially important as we see trans people’s dignity and rights actively put under threat by UK media and government.

What kinds of things can I submit?

Pretty much anything that can be put in (digital or physical) print, including things you have created before, meaning not everything you submit has to be newly created for the zine! Traditional and digital illustrations, sketches, paintings, fanfiction, written analysis, poetry, collages, cosplay photography, fibre crafts, patterns, etc... even links to digital content, if it's not possible or feasible to include it directly. Pieces which are not of typically 'fully finished' quality are also welcome.

Can I submit 18+ content?

Yes.

Can I draw or write about characters other than Dio in my submission?

Yes, you may include other JJBA characters, but the primary focus should be on Dio.

Will submissions about Diego be allowed?

Yes, it makes sense to allow Diego because he is an alternative universe version of Dio.
